Social Media and Sex Education

She sits behind a desk and waits for questions to be asked.  She is the real person behind “In Case You Are Curious,”  a text-chat program run by Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains.

Everyday she receives hundreds of text questions from people, mostly teens, who have basic questions about sexuality, STD’s and anything related to sex.  It is completely anonymous and the kids receive a response within 24 hours by text.

“What they don’t understand is that I am a real  sex education specialist who is taking the time to answer their questions in the most effective manner for them to understand it. I log into the computer every day and spend part of my day answering all their questions.”

Sexual education is a very sensitive topic in most schools across the nation and school districts teach everything from abstinence to sexual education.  “It really depends on the school district and the specific school itself.  Some schools are welcoming and others are not.  At least kids don’t have to be afraid to ask questions that they wouldn’t ask their parents or their friends.”

This program is making a difference by educating teens about safe and healthy sex habits that truly range from abstinence to the importance of using a condom or having birth control.  Some questions are funny and show how little our teens know about sex and sexuality.

We applaud Planned Parenthood of the Rockies for making a difference and for reaching out to youth in a socially innovative and fun way!
